The Importance of Taking Care of Yourself

As an employee, leader, or business owner it’s crucial to understand and know how to take care of yourself. The world we live in is ever-changing and we are constantly adapting with it; therefore, knowing when to step back and take time for self-care is extremely important. Here are some ideas that may be helpful when knowing what self care activity works best for you.

Setting Time For Yourself

It’s important for you to set time for self care each day, even when it seems like you may not have time. This looks different for everyone, but it will make a huge difference in how you feel throughout the day. For example, maybe you wake up thirty minutes early to meditate or maybe you take a walk during your lunch break. Whatever it is that works for you, set time to do just that.

Being Consistent

In order to ensure you are constantly taking time for self care, you must be consistent. Being consistent will be very beneficial in the long run, and it will help you stay on track. Try one activity that is self care for you and do it every day for at least one week to start. Hold yourself accountable and have others hold you accountable too! Ask a coworker to go with you on a walk during your lunch break. You don’t always have to do self care alone. Check out my blog post here about the importance of having a work friend — this can apply to self care too.

Set Boundaries

This may be the hardest part for some of you, but set boundaries! Setting boundaries looks different for everyone, but get comfortable with saying no to something if it interferes with your self care time. Say no to working overtime if it’s not something that you are mentally prepared for. Say no to work if it interferes with your hobbies or after work activities.

Saying no and setting those boundaries will help you to be more productive during your day and get your work done without feeling overwhelmed or overworked.

As leaders, it is important for you to recognize when you need to step back to take care of yourself, but also recognize this in your employees. There is no harm in allowing your employees to work from home or take a day out of the office to work in a different environment.
